So, while their Western counterparts are enjoying their lives in complete freedom, Asian gays, most of them anyway, are suffering in silence, lest they get ostracized. It is something that should be treated, and treatment involves efforts to convert them from their sexual orientation. Another hurdle for Asian gay teens, in China especially, is that many of their mental health professionals still consider this as a mental health issue. Despite this, many Chinese people are still not used to accepting gays, especially the parents who still have retained their old school beliefs.
Up until the year 2000, being gay or lesbian was considered a mental illness. Take for example China, the country with the largest population and the second-largest economy in the world. They are having a tougher time getting their real identities out since the culture in most Asian nations is not the same as in the West. In Asia, however, things are not going smoothly for Asian gays, especially if you are an Asian gay teenager. It all probably started there, with the United States leading the way. This probably started with the gay rights movement in the 1980s in Western countries.
They are now more aware of the need to accept gays and lesbians. The past couple of decades have presented a shift in outlook among the general public.
Because of the open culture where people are more accepting of who you are and what you want to be, more and more gays, lesbians, and transgenders are coming out at a young (18/25) age.
